Environmental trip to Leigh Woods

Year 3 at Parson Street went on a trip to Leigh Woods, a national trust woodland area. Whilst we were there we; explored the woods with a focus on natural play, used and critiqued the current play facilities, and finally designed our own play areas.

Sharing ideas from Ocejon School - Easter baskets!

Thank you to Year 1 Pupils and Teachers in Ocejon school for showing Ms Beale how to make baskets for your Halloween celebrations. We used you idea and made some Easter baskets for our chocolate eggs!

Forest School comes to Parson Street!

Forest School comes to Parson Street!

We are thrilled that Year 1 at Parson Street are now participating in weekly Forest School sessions. Classes 3 and 4 enjoy going outside to explore and learn for an afternoon a week. The sessions are helping them to: grow in independence, be creative, understand the natural environment, have fun and much more!

Session 1: Nature Collectors!

The children were given a sticky strip and asked to collect items with certain characteristics. For example: different coloured items, items with different textures and items with different smells. Each one was brilliant and unique and some of the children decided to turn them into crowns when they had finished.

Session 2: Potion Making!

In session 2 Year 1 all became Potion makers. They measured out 50ml of water using a measuring jug, chose a stirring stick then selected natural items to make the potion. They decided whether to make a nice or a nasty potion and decided what the potion was for - they had to keep this a secret! At the end of the session we smelled everyone's potions and guessed what they were for. It was great fun!

Making Jewellery from Natural Resources

Forest Club had an amazing time making jewellery from Elder Wood. They learnt lots about the wood first of all, including historical information, how it helps animals and what it is used for. Then the children decided to make a necklace, bracelet, head dress or key ring.

The children sawed their own beads and then poked out the pith before threading them onto a string. Some children stripped off the bark and others used felt tip pens to decorate their beads.

Hampton Court Flower Show

The Calendula that the children at Gardening Club grew were displayed 2 weeks ago at Hampton Court Flower Show. Miss Keyes and Miss Read went along to tale to people about Calendula and about the project.

The project was award a bronze award and the display looked beautiful. We are very proud of our young gardeners!

Year 5 visit Asford Education Center

This year the children in year 5 visited a water recycling and treatment plant as part of their topic on water management. We had a very interesting day working in groups and learnt about how water is treated to make it suitable for human consumption.

Our trip began with a walk around the reservoir where we found out about how water is stored and the wildlife that surround the lake. The countryside was beautiful and it was very beneficial to spend some time in the fresh air.

Next we went inside the treatment plant and learnt about how water is treated to make it safe for drinking before it reaches our homes. The children were surprised by how dirty the water is to start with and the number of different processes it has to go through before it can be used. It was fascinating to learn about the history of water purification and to learn how lucky we are to be able to turn on our taps and have fresh running water when ever we want!

The day ended with a river study. We leant about the correct geographical terns for parts of the river and measured its speed using the traditional game of pooh sticks. The children had lots of fun getting wet and we left tired but with a much better understanding of all the hard work that goes into water treatment.

Parson Street Green Team Waste Recycling Case Study with Bristol City Council.

In Parson Street we have been recycling our waste for many years. We now work closely with Bristol City Council. They are sharing our good practise to help other schools manage their waste. Take a look at our poster. In October when we visit Spain and we will share how we manage waste and recycling with our Comenius Partners.

Year 4 Take Part in the Great Litter Count!

In terms 5 and 6, Year 4 become Planet Protectors and investigate ways we can protect our local and global environments. As part of our learning, we took part in England's Great Litter Count!
England's Great Litter Count tells us which brands are dropped most as litter on our nation's streets. Last year, for the first time ever, they asked for volunteers to join them in measuring the state of our streets. So Year 4 took to the streets armed with litter pickers and high vis vests to survey our local area!

 

Planting Calendula at Parson Street

A few weeks ago, Gardening Club planted some Calendula seeds with a lady from Bristol Zoo. She told us about all the amazing properties of Calendula and what it can be used for including: hand cream, tea and even toothpaste!

We all agreed that the Calendula seeds are very unusual. They look a little bit like tiny caterpillars! We planted the seeds into small pots and covered the top of the soil with vermiculate. We kept the plants inside until they had grown a few centimetres tall and then we put them outside. 

They are doing really well now!

The flowers are going to be displayed at Bristol Zoo and at the famous Hampton Court Flower Show in London! We are very excited about this and will post photos of the flowers to the blog.

Beat the flood Project November 2013

On our Science and Technology Day, we learned about the impact of floods in communities.
We used the website http://practicalaction.org/beattheflood to plan our activities.
We designed and built some models, then carried out some tests to see if our designs were floodproof!
