Year 3 have been exploring different forces. Their challenge was to discover the effect of air resistance by using the outdoor space and a sheet of card!
Step 1:
All children ran without card, how did it feel?
Step 2:
All children then ran with a large sheet of card behind them. Did they feel a difference in speed?
Step 3:
All children talked about the differences.
What we found out
When running with no card, our bodies could cut through the air more easily as there was less air resistance. Whilst running with a sheet of card, the card slowed us down as the air had to be pushed around a larger surface area. This resulted in the air resistance being greater.
Parachute
We moved onto looking at the effects of air resistance using a parachute. To demonstrate this we played several games, including fruit salad. This game involves every child holding the outside of a parachute. The children were given a name of a fruit and when the teacher called out a fruit name the children swapped places by running underneath the parachute. The children were able to do this by lifting up the parachute enabling air to circulate underneath.
Challenge: can you come up with any of your own games to help support the learning of air resistance???
